First Released: PC (2001)
Now Available On: PC (free download)

Football Manager 2014 recently triumphed in Digital Spy's World Cup of football games, fending off competition from some of the greatest togger titles of all time.

FM14 is indeed a beautiful game, yet some of the series' most passionate supporters would have you believe its zenith came with Championship Manager: Season 01/02.

Much has changed since the days of Championship Manager 01/02. Sports Interactive has parted company with Eidos in favour of a new home at Sega, and the franchise has embraced modern technology by introducing a 3D match engine.

Championship Manager has also grown in complexity and stature since its rebranding as Football Manager, so why do so many still hold this 13-year-old instalment dear?

The answer is quite simple - the 2001 game struck a delicate balance between accessibility and in-depth simulation, a concoction that helped it garner a reputation as one of the most additive PC titles around.

Sports Interactive has ceased making games in the traditional sense, with the recent Football Manager iterations categorised as 'football products'; but Championship Manager 01/02 cherry-picked the best elements of management and served them up in a user-friendly package.

Many football management enthusiasts still believe that the series was never the same following the release of Championship Manager 4 in 2003, claiming it over-complicated the formula with the introduction of a 2D match engine and dozens of extra features.

Championship Manager 01/02 was hardly a revolutionary addition to the franchise, subtly tweaking a blueprint that was already perfected in the eyes of many.

The game still resembled and played like a glorified spreadsheet on the surface, but delving deeper, this was every football fan's dream, and it attracted the kind of fervent support that most Premier League teams would swap their top goalscorer for.

New features that season included the introduction of the EU-regulated transfer system, attribute masking, the option to send players away for surgery and improved media interaction.

Attribute masking, also referred to as the fog of war, added a dash of realism to the experience by preventing managers from viewing the stats for footballers they wouldn't have direct access to.

There were more than 100 playable leagues on offer in Championship Manager 01/02, from the English Premier League to Major League Soccer in the US, and a post-release patch even added South Korea's K League.

The 2001 instalment also included one of the most famous players in the history of the franchise, the fictitious To Madeira, a legendary Portuguese striker added to the database by a scout working for the game's producers.

As far as fictitious players go, Madeira is up there with a certain Roy of the Rovers.

It was the prefect simulation of football management in its day, but Championship Manager 01/02 is still ticking over today thanks to the efforts of an undying community, and that's what makes the game so special.

Online forums such as champman0102.co.uk continue to provide updates for the game, allowing fans to play it with the current season's stats baked in.

In 2002, Sports Interactive took the decision to move away from PC for the first time since the Championship Manager 2 era by bringing the game to the Xbox.

PC will always be the definitive platform for the series, but Championship Manager 01/02 was successful enough on the Microsoft system to warrant a follow-up in the form of 02/03.

Eidos has always been aware of the special place the game holds in the hearts of many, and in 2008, the publisher made it available as a free download on its website and endorsed the unofficial patches from champman0102.co.uk.
